Drugs to avoid giving your Sphynx!

Most veterinarians are unaware of the drugs that shouldn't be given to sphynx cats, its important to talk to your vet and have them put it on the sphynx file. So these drugs that may cause problems aren't given to them.

Ketamine

Ketamine has caused many deaths in the Sphynx breed. It can cause respiratory and cardiac failure. Breeders avoid using ketamine for spay’s and neuter’s. It’s best to avoid ever using ketamine.

What is ketamine? Vets use it for starting and maintaining anesthesia. It induces a trance like state while providing pain relief, sedation, and memory loss.

Convenia

Convenia can cause anemia, tremors/ataxia, seizures, diarrhea, lethargy, anorexia and death. It’s important to know that once this drug is given you can not retrieve it from the body. The side effects are for all breeds not just the Sphynx.

What is Convenia? Convenia is a injectable long lasting antibiotic for the treatment of skin infections in cats and dogs. This drug stays in the body for over 2 months.

Steroids

Steroids are fine to be given short term. But long term can cause diabetes, kidney failure, thyroid issues and urinary tract infections. They can also worsen skin infections and cause vomiting and nausea.

What are steroids? Steroids reduce inflammation. They are used to treat inflammatory diseases and conditions.

Metacam

Metacam has caused many side effects in Sphynx. Best to avoid.

What is Metacam? It’s used to treat pain and inflammation.
